Overcoming PTSD and Phobias: A Journey of a friend through NLP Coaching

As a Life Coach and passionate student of Psychology, I've had the privilege of working with many individuals on their journey to healing and self-discovery. One particular client stands out in my memory – a person who was struggling with PTSD and a debilitating phobia due to past experiences. Over the course of four NLP coaching sessions, we were able to transform their relationship with fear and trauma. I want to share this story with you, hoping it will resonate with anyone stuck in the grip of trauma or phobias, preventing them from living life to its fullest.

The Discovery Session: Unveiling the Fear

When my client first came to me, they were trapped in a cycle of fear and anxiety, unable to move past a traumatic event that had occurred years ago. This initial session was all about discovery. We took the time to delve into their past, understand their triggers, and map out the way this trauma was manifesting in their daily life.

In our conversation, I listened deeply, providing a safe space for them to express their fears and anxieties. This wasn't just about identifying the phobia – it was about understanding the emotions attached to it. By the end of the session, we had a clear picture of the trauma and its impact, setting the stage for the transformative work ahead.


Session Two: The Phobia Cure

offers a powerful technique known as the phobia cure, and in our second session, we focused on this. The process involves desensitising the traumatic memory and altering the way the brain responds to it.

Using guided visualisation, I helped my client reimagine their traumatic experience from a detached perspective, as if they were watching a movie. We worked on reducing the emotional intensity of the memory, gradually transforming it into something less frightening and more manageable. By the end of the session, my client reported a significant decrease in their immediate fear response.


Session Three: Changing the Narrative

With the immediate phobia addressed, our third session focused on changing the narrative around the trauma. Our goal was to help my client reframe their experience, shifting from a place of fear and victimhood to one of strength and resilience.

We explored the stories they had been telling themselves about the trauma – that it defined them, that they were powerless. Through NLP techniques, we began to rewrite these narratives. We highlighted their courage in seeking help, their strength in surviving the trauma, and their capacity for healing. This reframing process was crucial in altering their emotional response and building a new, empowering story about their past.


Session Four: Managing Emotions

In our final session, we concentrated on emotional management strategies. It was important for my client to have tools they could use in everyday life to handle residual anxiety or fear. We practised techniques such as anchoring, where they could create a calm, positive state of mind by using a specific physical trigger, like pressing their thumb and forefinger together.

We also worked on mindfulness exercises and positive visualisations, empowering them to stay grounded and present, rather than being pulled back into the past. To take our work a step further, I decided to assist my client, who is also a dear friend, with a practical challenge. Knowing she had a fear of driving due to her past trauma, I took her for a drive. This was her first time behind the wheel since dealing with the phobia. I wanted to support her not just as a coach, but as a friend. By the end of our drive, she felt more confident and less anxious about driving, marking a significant milestone in her journey.


A Message to Those Stuck in Fear

If you’re reading this and find yourself stuck in a similar cycle of fear or trauma, I want you to know that change is possible. Fear is a natural and necessary emotion – it keeps us alert and aware. However, it should never control your decisions or prevent you from experiencing the fullness of life.

Consider these steps as you embark on your own journey:

  1. Acknowledge the Fear: Understand where it comes from and how it affects you.

  2. Seek Help: Don’t be afraid to reach out for support from a coach, therapist, or trusted individual.

  3. Reframe the Narrative: Work on changing the story you tell yourself about your trauma. Focus on your strengths and resilience.

  4. Equip Yourself: Learn and practice techniques that help you manage your emotions and stay grounded.


Two Essential Self-Realisation Questions

To anyone feeling stuck in a similar situation, here are two essential self-realisation questions to ponder:

  1. "Am I truly listening to understand my emotions, or am I letting them dictate my actions?"

  • This question encourages you to reflect on your emotional responses and whether you are open to understanding them or just reacting impulsively.

  1. "What am I holding onto that is preventing me from moving forward and experiencing life fully?"

  • This question helps you identify any fear, past grievances, or unrealistic expectations that might be hindering your progress.


The journey to overcoming trauma and phobias is not easy, but it is certainly possible. By taking some mindful steps coached by an expert, you can reclaim control over your life and start experiencing the joy and freedom that comes with it.
